Dual Impact

In the summer of 2008, 15 young Deaf people aged 16 -25 were participated in 2 weeks intensive Deaf Theatre course at ALRA learning the basic technique of acting and preforming skill on theatre stage. It was run by Kenny Lawrence and David Ellington, with support of two Deaf writers – Samuel Dore and Charles Swinborne.

Big Dreams

Shooters Hill 16+ Campus approached DRoots Theatre in early 2007 to discuss if there was some way to provide a drama project. We agreed that we would deliver a taster workshop and see if we could be inspired to take it to a further level.

Funded by Youth Opportunities Fund, we embarked on a series of workshops exploring with the students their own life perspectives and their deafness, through writing, devising and improvising scenes, introducing Abstract Theatre forms, storytelling, movement and dance. This was an experimental project and the result producing visual and dynamic theatre that discovers an identity.

We ended by showing the performance to the public in Shooters Hill 16+ Campus last year July under the direction of Steven Webb and David Ellington. The public was given a treat by showing short film clips how this project was envisaged from its beginning of its journey to the end. Resource is available for anyone who wishes to have a DVD copy of this work. This applies only for people who work in schools, colleges, organisations, funders, community centres and philanthropic investors.

Bristol Deaf Drama Club

Back in August 2007 DRoots Theatre developed a few days Drama summer course with Family Centre in Bristol, which is DRoots second area base. From there we wanted to expand the concept by providing opportunities for young Deaf children (age from 4 to 9 years old)  in and around Bristol, again we set up 3 months drama weekly series club with Family Centre from January 2009, as DRoots aims to develop projects not only in London, but nationwide. We hope to continue to develop and expand the programme of series weekend Drama sessions with further option of residential course.
